Stop the Selling!

This is something everyone who uses social media as a marketing tool needs to know. If you want to have success in this arena, you need to have a very specific mindset. This is diametrically opposed to the traditional selling model. As time passes, more and more people are becoming highly resistant to traditional selling language and techniques. If you continue to use these, you may gain some small ground, but in the long run will damage your online image irrevocably.

It’s so easy to contact people these days. Emails, Tweets, Facebook, it takes seconds. Instead of spending only those few seconds trying to sell yourself to someone, work on creating a relationship with them. Treating your efforts like the slow, gradual process of a face to face relationship may take longer, but will pay higher dividends in the long run. Make yourself known as a provider of valuable content. Get to know the person, instead of just sending a generic email. I was inspired to write this post after reading Robert M. Caruso’s article here which has some great action items on how to move forward with this strategy.
